Talk about an ideal “consolation prize” buck. For the past two years Indiana’s Robert Kaelin has been hunting a whopper of an Indiana buck that he also encountered early this spring, while turkey hunting. But Kaelin has yet to get that buck on film during the summer of 2022. Enter the newcomer. For sending in photos of what looks to be a fine still-growing 11-point Hoosier State buck, taken back in late July and early August, Kaelin is the Week Eight winner of our 2022 Big Buck HIT LIST contest.
The weekly win scores Kaelin a Wildlife Research Center scent prize package valued at $44.99. It also makes him eligible for our drawing to win a Grand Prize Package valued at more than $630. The Grand Prize includes a wide variety of Wildlife Research Center products and two proven hunting optics from Burris.
“This is a new buck to my area,” Kaelin wrote. “This tract is about 160 acres of private land that is a mix of woods and fields. The timber was logged a few years ago, so this area is really thick, with tons of cover. My goal is to bag this buck with a bow, but if that doesn’t pan out I‘ll try for him during gun season.
“My trail cameras are located where they are, due to trying to pattern this particular buck. The buck I have been hunting for the last two years has not shown up yet. But he is still in the area, as we saw him during spring turkey season.”
