Last fall a promising young buck was passed. This year, he’s become a true Ohio brute…and our Week 9 HIT LIST winner.
Regardless of Eric Dowiatt’s current facial expression, right now the Ohio bowhunter is smiling inside. It’s because last fall Dowiatt passed on a very promising young deer that has turned into the type of buck many of us dream of. For showing restraint while bowhunting last fall Dowiatt has been rewarded with a Week Nine win in our 2018 Big Buck HIT LIST contest that makes him eligible for a sweet new hunting optic from Burris. And of course, with Ohio’s archery season set to open Sept. 29, another fine prize might await.
“I passed on this buck last year, hoping for him to make it and he did,” Dowiatt wrote. “I managed to find only his right side shed, but he has turned into a brute. Would love to wait one more year, but there is some hunting pressure around.“This area is over a mineral site but the local bucks usually stage here as well early in the season, before traveling to nearby hay and bean fields,” Dowiatt continued. “The woods are typically loaded with acorns and there’s plenty of bedding around. I will shoot him with a bow if this all comes together.”
We’re still looking for ONE MORE weekly winner; to enter the HuntStand 2018 Big Buck HIT LIST Contest, simply send us a few clear, digital trail cam photos (two to four) of a buck (or bucks) TAKEN IN THE SUMMER OF 2018 (Day or night images, photos accepted NOW THROUGH SEPT. 6). Be sure to include the date and state the images were taken, and a few sentences detailing the type of terrain/area where the image(s) were captured (i.e. funnel leading to soybean field, favorite stand site near creekbed, etc.) and some info on the buck(s) pictured. Do you have any history with the buck? Is the buck a likely newcomer to your area? Is it somehow unusual or unique for the area? What weapons/seasons will you use to hunt the pictured buck(s)?Along with your photos, include your full name and age, and also be sure to include your mailing address.
