When diligent hunting and regular game-cam use shows a local mature buck is now larger and gnarlier than ever, our Week 7 winner is crowned.
Veteran hunters know mature bucks rarely come easy, but things are trending nicely so far in 2020 for Georgia’s David Blair. Blair, 40, has been hunting the same 50-acre parcel with some buddies for the past 12 years, and has been watching an impressive local buck grow and mature for the last several years—enough to know his primary target buck is now 5 years old and more gnarly and impressive than ever. For sending in 2020 photos of the well-known Georgia buck, Blair is the Week 7 winner of our 2020 Big Buck HIT LIST contest. The weekly win scores Blair a Wildlife Research Center scent and scent-elimination prize package valued at more than $82, and also makes him eligible for our September drawing to win a Wildlife Research Center prize package valued at more than $180. “I have attached a few photos of the buck I call ‘Sonic’ (named by my 4-year-old son),” Blair wrote. “He is a known 5-year-old buck that I have several years of history with, although this is the first year he has had the kickers and trash growing. These photos are mostly from early July here in NW Georgia, on a spring food plot of soybeans, cow peas, alfalfa, and clover. The last (night) image is from early August.
“This is a 50-acre tract of land that funnels deer down between two blocks of woods with a lake on one side and a swamp on the other. The property is strictly bowhunting only, so our deer get age on them. I have had this property for 12 years and hunt it with two of my friends. It is generally our favorite place to be once November comes around, because of the ability to see a lot of chasing and seeking. We have several hang-on stands situated along the southern edge of the food plot we have planted, in order to take advantage of our predominant northwest wind in this area, as well as the key pinch points along the swamp. “The hope is to capitalize on this buck in the early season, before he disappears until the rut starts in late November.”
