Last year this reclusive MN droptine was stand-out impressive; for 2020 he’s bigger and badder.
Talk about living right. Last fall Minnesota’s Jim Woods was hunting a jaw-dropping mature droptine buck he’d not only managed to capture on his game cams, but Woods also had three separate encounters with the buck that always seemed to pass frustratingly out of range. Then one fateful day an even larger, never-before-seen buck wandered within 20 yards, and Woods’ 2019 season was over. And Woods’ embarrassment of riches continues, because the big droptine is back for 2020, and, yes, he’s even larger and more jaw-dropping. For sending in 2020 photos of the stunning MN droptine, Woods is the Week 6 winner of our 2020 Big Buck HIT LIST contest. The weekly win scores Woods a Wildlife Research Center scent and scent-elimination prize package valued at more than $82, and also makes him eligible for our September drawing to win a Wildlife Research Center prize package valued at more than $180. Enter today!“This big droptine is number one on my list this year in southeast MN,” Woods wrote. “He doesn’t come by very often; I was after him last year and saw him three days in a row last fall, but just out of bow range. On the fourth day, an even bigger newcomer buck got within 20 yards, and I filled my 2019 tag.
“But, this year the big droptine is looking awfully good; these velvet images were captured July 17, 2020. The two hard-horned images (below) are of the same buck taken Sept. 29, 2019.
“The land here is filled with ridges and valleys, with crops on both the tops and in the bottoms. The land is all private in this area, and I will be able to hunt with bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader this year; recent regulation changes for this area allow us to shoot one buck with each weapon.”
To enter the 2020 Big Buck HIT LIST Contest, simply send us a few clear, high-res. digital trail cam photos (three to five) of a buck (or bucks) TAKEN IN THE SUMMER OF 2020 (Day or night images, photos accepted NOW THROUGH SEPT. 6).
Be sure to include the dates and state where the images were taken, and a few sentences detailing the type of terrain/area where the images were captured (i.e. funnel leading to soybean field, favorite stand site near wooded creekbed, etc.) and some info on the buck(s) pictured. Do you have any history with the buck? Is the buck a likely newcomer to your area? Is the deer somehow unique or unusual for the area? What weapons/seasons will you use to hunt the pictured buck(s)?
