First Look: Federal Sub-Gauge Loads For Upland Bird Hunters

by HuntStand

MORE FROM HuntStand

Old-school upland bird hunters have long romanticized about the “oddball” sub-gauge shotguns and loads … namely the 16-gauge and 28-gauge. In a previous chapter of bird gunning history, both of these venerable gauges were forced to take a backseat due to the overwhelming popularity of 12-gauge and 20-gauge options. Finally, after decades of begging and pleading from a core cult of shotgunners and wingshooters, manufacturers are supplying the sub-gauge niche with shotguns and loads that are readily available and ready to rock birds.

Prairie Storm loads from Federal are a great example of this second coming of the sub-gauges. New for 2020 are the 16- and 28-gauge options featuring the new Flitecontrol Flex wads. And you can take pride in buying Prairie Storm ammo because every box benefits Pheasants Forever.

This video was captured with the great folks at Pine Shadows Daybreak pheasant hunting lodge in South Dakota. Consider booking your next rooster hunt with them.
