Wyoming offers the best pronghorn antelope hunting in the world. The chips are stacked in your favor if you’re trying to win a piece of the West by pursuing the mighty pronghorn in Wyoming—no other place has more antelope than the Cowboy State. Last week, I spent 5 days stalking antelope on the high plains of the beautiful Schiermiester Ranch outside the quaintly charming town of Kaycee.
Aside from trying to tag a speed goat, my mission was to test the salt of fresh hunting and camping gear. Savage Arms loaned me a new (pre-production) rifle that will be fully revealed to the public in 2018. Details? All I can tell you now is that it performed flawlessly and helped me optimize my personal accuracy potential, but HuntStand will be the first to announce its release next January. The Savage was loaded with Federal Premium’s new Edge TLR ammunition, which proved itself on paper and pronghorn. Western big-game hunting success weighs heavily on glass—for this trip I used Cabela’s Instinct Euro HD binoculars along with several models of Cabela’s spotting scopes to tear apart the broken terrain, plus a new Instinct riflescope when it was trigger time. After each long day of crawling through sagebrush and eating dust, I fueled up with help from Camp Chef and recharged in the comfort of a new Cabela’s Instinct tent, which was conveniently built to withstand Wyoming’s relentless winds.
More nitty-gritty gear rundowns and hunt details will be coming down the pike. Until then, watch this video for a taste of the Wild West …
