Sometimes in the deer woods things don’t go quite exactly as planned, but everything works out in the end. That’s part of the beauty of hunting, and 19-year-old Richard Zimmerman of KY can certainly relate. Zimmerman, a fanatical whitetail hunter since age 12 who recently acquired some self-filming gear, was eager to document the hunt for a buck he’d been tracking with trail cameras for the past few years. Zimmerman didn’t get the footage he dreamed about, but he did arrow the jaw-dropping KY buck, making him the first weekly winner in the 2021 HuntStand Big Buck ALERT contest. The win earns Zimmerman a sweet hunt pack from ALPS OutdoorZ: the versatile Covert pack (see below). The weekly win also makes Zimmerman eligible for our Grand Prize drawing in November (more on that below).

“I’ve had history of this buck for a few years, and was finally able to pattern his home core area with the help of HuntStand, including finding a great stand location, and his suspected bedding area.” Zimmerman wrote. “And of course, I always make good use of the HuntStand HuntZone wind indicator, and barometer, both of which paid off on this hunt.
“This year I’d given this buck the name ‘Home Boy’ since his core area was so small; it seemed like he stayed on our property for his summer range, and on Sept. 9, I was very blessed to get a perfect 20-yard shot on him during the second day of the season, at 6:30 p.m. The north wind conditions were perfect for my stand, and I saw the barometer was on the rise and the temperature was dropping, and so I got off work about 4 p.m. and decided to give it a try.
“I’ve been hunting since the age of 12 and recently, have decided to start self-filming my hunts as a way to add some challenges, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to have my gear ready to film this hunt.”
