Talk about redemption. Prior to this fall Kentucky’s Lorie Potter had been on a serious string of buck-less seasons. To make matters worse, she knew a recent injury would prevent her from using her vertical bow this fall. Ah, but Potter had a plan. Did she ever. For sending in photos and HuntStand success story of a brute of a Kentucky buck that ends a long buck drought, Potter is the Week Two winner in the 2022 HuntStand Big Buck ALERT contest. The win earns Potter a sweet hunt pack from ALPS OutdoorZ: the versatile Trail Blazer (see below). The weekly win also makes Potter eligible for a chance at our Grand Prize: A ground blind/chair combo from Browning/ALPS OutdoorZ and two premium Burris hunting optics with a total value of $1,278!

“I first saw this buck in July of this year,” Potter wrote. “I knew as soon as I saw him I wanted to tag him. Unable to pull my bow due to medical problems, I knew I would have to wait until crossbow season.
“I set a camera and got several photos of this buck up to the day I bagged him. Our crossbow season in Kentucky started September 17th this year. I knew if the wind was right I would be hunting this buck on that day. We went in on Sept. 16th and set up a ground blind where we thought I would have the best chance to harvest this buck. Thanks to the HuntStand app, I was able to monitor the wind direction and move in for my hunt.
“Although the weather was warm, like clockwork he showed up on opening day afternoon, but only presented me with a head-on shot. At one point he was only 10 yards away. It took all my patience to let him walk away without taking a shot.
HuntStand Wind Check
“After checking the wind direction on HuntStand, I returned to my ground blind near a cedar tree the following afternoon, Sunday, Sept. 18th.,” Potter continued. “I was sitting in my blind wondering why I let him walk away the day before. I wondered if I would ever see him again. Fortunately for me he returned a short time later, and presented me with a quartering shot, again at only 10 yards. I settled the crosshairs on his chest and squeezed the trigger. My bolt flew true, striking the buck just behind his shoulder and exiting the other side. He turned and ran; I lost sight of him after only a few yards.
“I’m normally a very calm person, but I got that adrenaline dump and shakes after the shot that I normally don’t experience. I contacted my husband on my phone and told him, ‘I got him.’ As my husband and son arrived I walked up on a large copperhead snake in the direction my buck had run, luckily without incident.
“After a short tracking job with my nine-year-old son Brice and my husband, we located my buck only 80 yards from where I shot him. To say I was excited would be an understatement. I haven’t killed a buck in about 15 years, and never anything close to this big. This hunt was another reminder why I enjoy the outdoors. I enjoyed the rest of the afternoon and evening with my family, and my taxidermist!”
