Three bedded bucks. One unfavorable wind. When HuntStand shows a change is looming, a Georgia bowhunter takes full advantage.
Georgia’s Rodney Biles had a problem most of us wish for. During an early season morning hunt he watched three bucks walk by out of range, and head to a bedding area. The primary problem, other than the deer being out of range, was that if those bucks returned to the stand site, the current wind direction would allow them to wind the awaiting bowhunter.
Luckily, the quick-thinking Biles is a regular HuntStand app user. His quick check of the app showed a late-evening wind direction change that just might work, if the bucks remained in the area. Biles snuck out of the area and returned when conditions were more favorable, and the result was not only a fine Georgia 10-pointer, but also, another HuntStand Success Story. Here’s how it happened:
“I use the HuntStand Hunting app all the time, especially for checking the general wind direction and the ScentCone at my stand sites, and so I knew the wind was out of the east on September 14, 2016.
“That morning from my stand I used my binoculars to watch three different bucks head off to bed, about 70 yards from my stand. Knowing where those bucks had gone and where they were likely to return, I knew an east wind was bad for this particular stand location. But another advantage of the HuntStand app is that it shows you wind direction by the hour, and so I knew at 7 p.m. that evening the wind was changing to the north/northeast.
“I knew the wind change would be okay, but still not the best wind for this stand, but I thought I would have enough of an advantage to make it happen. I got in the stand right at 7 p.m. and sure enough, HuntStand was dead-on about the wind direction change. As soon as I got into the stand I could see the bucks bedded, still about 70 yards away, and after about 10 minutes, they got up and started feeding, slowly making their way right to me. Almost as if it was scripted, I eventually shot the largest buck of the group, the 10-pointer you see here. Without HuntStand I never would have attempted this hunt, because of the wind direction. HuntStand showed me the tiny window of opportunity I needed and it worked like a charm. Thank you HuntStand!”
Congrats Rodney on an awesome hunt, and one beauty of a Georgia whitetail. Your story not only shows the effectiveness of the HuntStand app, but also how it can help users take advantage of even the smallest windows of opportunity. Nice work!
For sharing his HuntStand app success story, Biles will receive a pair of Arctic Ice cooler packs: One Tundra Series X-Large cooler pack (complete Tundra Series set shown above) and one Chillin’ Brew X-Large cooler pack, a $60 total value.
