Smarter vests. Deadlier guns and bows. Better calls and ammo. Whatever your turkey gear needs for 2017, this well-rounded guide is packed with great new stuff—and HuntStand award winners—that all turkey chasers need to see.
Today’s turkeys are doing what they have been doing since the first pterodactyl learned to gobble, but the landscape is changing. The bigwoods run-and-gun tactics some of us grew up with are becoming less feasible. Today more hunting is done in field and fencerow habitat than ever before, requiring a slight adjustment in both tactics and gear, and smart hunters and gear manufacturers are catching on.
The latest turkey gear clearly illustrates this strategy, from the introduction of several new ground blind companies to the ultra-realism (and amazing effectiveness) of the newest decoys.
In the call business, we’re mostly seeing a few new wrinkles on some old standards, yet ground-breaking innovation continues, especially in improved operation and acoustics of several new box and slate calls. And some nearly forgotten diaphragm call designs are reappearing. But don’t throw your old calls away just yet. If it called turkeys 20 years ago, it will lure turkeys today.
Several new blinds, blind accessories, and shooting sticks are all turning heads this year, but don’t forget you’ll still need to know where (and when) to go. So be sure to keep scouting and watching the weather forecast, with help from your handy HuntStand app and its proven Log and ScoutMarx features that will help you track turkey activity/travel patterns, including popular natural food sources, as well as roosting and dusting areas and much more.
And before we get to the gear, do yourself (and the turkeys) a favor: join the National Wild Turkey Federation. The NWTF is greatly responsible for thriving turkey populations across the United States and even into parts of Canada and Mexico. Active support of wild turkey conservation is key to the future of turkey hunting.
SCOUTLOOK SPOTLIGHT: Thermacell MR450 Handheld Repeller. Thermacell took years of feedback from their customers aimed at the Handheld Repeller, and completely revamped the design, creating the new MR450 ($35). The redesigned grill allows for better airflow in an upright position, which helps emit a more-effective zone of protection if attached to your belt. The ignition switch is 50- to 80-percent quieter, and every unit comes with a belt clip for easy access and storage.
VIDEO: TEAM SCOUTLOOK’S IN-DEPTH THERMACELL REVIEW
Maybe the most exciting feature is the Indicator light, which illuminates when the unit has reached the appropriate temperature to emit the zone of protection. The indicator light will also let users know when the unit is running low on fuel—rather than being attacked by mosquitos. The MR450 uses the same mats and butane cartridges as previous units, so users will experience the same mosquito-free sits in treestands and turkey blinds.
SCOUTLOOK STEAL AWARD: Fleetwood Envoy2 Compound Bow. Thinking about getting into bowhunting for turkeys without spending a fortune? The Envoy2 is an incredible new state-of-the-art bow designed for both entry level and experienced archers alike—both youths and adults—and it comes at a true family friendly price: $300 for the complete, ready-to-shoot package that includes the bow, sight, rest and stabilizer. This smart new design features a fully adjustable draw length from 19 to 30 inches, and adjustable draw weight from 20 to 70 pounds. This means the Envoy2 will fit most youths and adults, but even better, the wide-ranging adjustability means it will grow right along with your youngster, making it the last bow you’ll ever have to buy. It’s available in Next G1 camo, Muddy Girl camo, and Black, ideal for hiding inside a ground blind.
SCOUTLOOK GAME-CHANGER AWARD: Ravin R9 Crossbow. You don’t have to told crossbows and crossbow hunting are hot, and the new R9 from Ravin Crossbows is boldly different than any crossbow ever created. It takes just one glance to see the hows and whys. Powered by Helicoil technology, this revolutionary crossbow has several design advantages that help provide impressive downrange accuracy with every shot, and this is no idle talk; Team HuntStand was among the first to test-fire this awesome crossbow at the January 2017 SHOT Show in Vegas, and the result was dependable accuracy out to 100 yards. The Ravin Crossbow has a sleek rifle-like design; with an incredible axle-to-axle measurement of a mere 6 inches at full draw, this makes the Ravin Crossbow significantly smaller and narrower than any crossbow on the market.
Engel Backpack Cooler Upgrade. Cooler specialist Engel has upgraded its popular soft-sided backpack coolers. With a heavier fabric shell, more color and camo options, and improved zippers, these upgraded softsided supercoolers are now an even better choice when you need to carry cold food and drinks into the outdoors. The basic design of the Engel Backpack Cooler has not changed; it is 19.5 inches wide by 17.5 inches tall, and the ample capacity tops out at around 23 quarts, or more than 24 cans of liquid refreshment with room for ice or Engel Cooler Packs. The outer fabric has been upgraded to 600-denier rip-stop polyester (from 500D) for increased durability and has a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating and UV protection. Also new are several new color and camo options: Sky Blue and Navy Blue, as well as three PRYM1 Camo patterns (MP, Pink-Out and Shoreline). Gray, Orange and Black Backpack Coolers are available with the Kenny Chesney “No Shoes Nation” logo. Suggested retail prices are $160 for solid colors, $180 for camo patterns and No Shoes Nation logo coolers.

A blood-proof breathable game pocket is included for carrying gear out to the field or game back from the field. The Super Elite 4.0 is constructed using a quiet cotton liner and has breathable mesh panels throughout.
ALPS OutdoorZ Grand Slam Turkey Vest. After the successful launch of its Extreme line geared toward big game and western hunters, ALPS determined it was time to focus its efforts on the wild turkey. The Grand Slam turkey vest is the culmination of years of research & development; it features a “sit-anywhere” removable kickstand frame, which allows you to set up wherever the birds may be without worrying about finding a spot to lean against. The legs are adjustable and feature fast locking technology to ensure you can set up quickly when the need arises. A thick padded fold away seat is integrated into the design, and detachable shoulder straps ensure maximum comfort and range of motion for when it’s time to take the shot. The vest boasts numerous call pockets, including a removable protective diaphragm call pocket, two slate call pockets, a striker pocket (which holds up to 3 strikers and 1 large locator call), a protective and silent box call pocket, and a locator call pocket. You’ll never again find yourself in the turkey woods without the call you need. The Grand Slam is H2O compatible, and also includes two side water bottle pockets. Two mesh zippered pockets inside of the vest are perfect for stowing valuables, like truck keys and pocket knives, and the included smartphone sleeve allows you to use your phone while it’s securely in the pocket. Five shell loops make accessing your extra ammo a breeze, and the side compression straps guarantee a perfect fit no matter your body type.

A first for Elite, the double-laminated split limbs are built to deliver optimal performance. This smart construction continues the tradition of Elite’s stable shooting platform, and bowhunters everywhere stand to benefit. Choose from eight hunting finishes and 12 target finishes.
Leupold Vendetta 2 Bow-Mounted Laser Rangefinder. Leupold & Stevens, Inc., revolutionized archery hunting with the introduction of its innovative Vendetta bow-mounted laser rangefinder. Now the updated Leupold Vendetta 2 adds to the innovation with a faster software package, an improved mounting system and the ability to use it on a crossbow. Squeezing the pressure pad switch attached to the bow’s grip, hunters can instantly range a target from full draw, eliminating unnecessary motion and maintaining stealth. Once activated from its sleep mode, the Vendetta 2 provides 45 seconds of auto scan ranging, which eliminates the need to continuously press and hold the activation pad. This means hunters can keep a shooting grip on the bow and reduce their movement. A new one-inch scope mount allows the Vendetta 2 to mount on crossbows, allowing this growing segment of archery hunters to benefit from this instant ranging technology. The Vendetta 2 is currently legal to use for hunters in 34 states and is recreational legal in all states.
CenterPoint Gladiator Whisper 405. Turkeys beware: CenterPoint Archery’s new-for-2017 flagship crossbow features the new Whisper Silencing System that helps hunters curb the sound of their crossbow and reduce the overall vibration of the bow for improved shot follow-through. You’ll also find Dual string stops, two limb dampeners and two spider silencers that come standard. The Gladiator Whisper 405 is built with a quality CNC machined aluminum rail for an easy draw cycle and smooth shooting; it measures a mere 13.5 axle-to-axle, and includes an all-weather composite stock in Realtree Xtra. The Field-Ready package includes three 390-grain carbon bolts, a rope cocker, a sling, rail lube and an illuminated 4x32mm scope.
Ameristep Supernatural Ground Blind. This new blind design caught our eye because its muted appearance would not catch the eye of a wary gobbler. Camo patterns on blinds look great these days but even some of the best of them have a reflective sheen when the sun shines just right on the tightly woven blind material. A definite no-no. To combat this Ameristep developed a natural fiber blind material they call Naturshell that eliminates the turkey-spooking glare. The dull, hazy appearance of the fabric blends nicely with a wide variety of terrains, allowing this blind to blend nicely into its surroundings, allowing you to disappear no matter where you set it up. MSRP: $250
Red Neck Blinds Sportsman HD Hay Bale Blind. This is the new-and-improved version of a blind that has been on the market for a while, but largely ignored by turkey hunters because of its weight (110 pounds) and therefore, lack of instant mobility. Don’t let that stop you. The new design of the Sportsman HD Hay Bale Blind can be moved easily enough, but it’s still a two-man job, and well worth the time and effort. We can’t think of a more-effective camo for modern-day field and fence row turkey hunters, than a nice and unobtrusive round bale of hay. For skittish turkeys in high-use, open-field feeding areas, this is one extremely deadly setup. MSRP $499.
Barronett Big Ox Blind. If you like an easily portable blind with a lot of room (and who doesn’t?), Barronett’s all-new Big Ox blind stands an impressive 80 inches tall, with an equally impressive footprint of 70×70 inches. You can hide all the kids (and their mom) in this one, with plenty of room to maneuver and make a deadly shot. Ten windows covered with replaceable shoot-through mesh give users a 360-degree view; also helpful is that the Big Ox is covered with a new low-sheen blind material that Barronett is calling OxHide. It’s actually two layers of fabric bonded together to form a highly durable waterproof skin designed to blend with virtually any background. This is one great-looking hunt fortress. MSRP $280.
Redneck Blinds Soft Side 6×6 Ghillie 360. This blind is built for comfort and stability, it ain’t built for speed. Weighing in at 110 pounds, the 6×6-foot octagon interior of the Soft Side 6×6 Ghillie 360 blind has plenty of room for three adults and their gear, along with plenty of windows for maximum visibility. What we especially like about this design is its wheelchair accessibility (the door opens wide enough for a 36-inch wheelchair) making it more suitable for those who would invite handicapped kids and wounded warriors to hunt. It’s an ideal choice for a semi-permanent blind placed in consistent, high-use turkey haunts. MSRP: $500 (Camo); $600 (Ghillie, shown).
Knight & Hale Run & Gun Quickblind. Team HuntStand can think of several times when a Knight & Hale Run & Gun Quickblind would have saved the day in the turkey woods. When it’s throw-down time simply open this smart design like an umbrella, set it on the ground in front of you and bam: you are covered. If you choose, add a stick and a limb here and there and—quick as that—you can blend perfectly with your surroundings. Let’s face it, most of us have been there. When things start happening fast in the turkey woods you can easily get caught out in the open; now you have an answer: Open your Quickblind! MSRP $50.
SOP Blind Hog Ground Blind Carry System. This is a helpful piece of equipment for turkey hunters who like to cover lots of ground and/or “go deep” in search of unmolested turkeys. Most blinds come with carrying cases but they are typically awkward, flimsy, and uncomfortable. The Blind Hog Carry System is a comfortable and well-balanced backpack designed to carry a blind and two blind stools in the main pouch, with external pockets large enough to hold decoys and stakes. It also has a compartment designed to transport a bow or shotgun. MSRP $55.
BenchMaster Sniper Seat 360 & Ground Hunting Chair. Here are two smart options for ground blind turkey hunters. The Sniper Seat 360 ($140; pictured above) features a durable foam back, 16- by 11-inch seat and arm rests that offer extreme comfort during long sits; you’ll also find an adjustable barrel rest and seat back that adjusts up to a 50-degree recline, for even more comfort. The four multi-position legs feature large, solid foot plates that can be adjusted separately for stability on uneven ground, or removed all together. The similar Ground Hunting & Shooting Chair ($80) has a durable foam-padded back and seat for extra comfort, with three (3) adjustable legs and silent, adjustable barrel rest; like the Sniper it rotates a full 360 degrees.
Chama Chair Co. Chama Chair. Turkey hunters know comfort is the square root of patience, and the smartly designed Chama Chair is, first and foremost, comfortable. Adjustable legs and pivoting “duck feet” are designed to keep you level and comfortable on any terrain, making this design ideal for long sits in ground blinds. Even better, the sturdy well-designed 360-degree swivel system is whisper quiet and silky smooth. At just over 7 pounds you likely won’t even notice the extra weight when you strap it to the side of your ground blind carry case. MSRP $190.
Browning Camping Strutter Chair. The ultimate chair every turkey and predator hunter has been looking for is here. Based on the tremendous success of the ALPS OutdoorZ Turkey Chair, the Strutter adds the convenience of an ultra-compact fold-up design that fits easily in a carry bag. Even better, none of the original Turkey Chair features were compromised, such as impressive comfort, strength and durability, and sitting low to the ground. More improvements include four rotating feet that ensure a firm and solid base, even on crooked terrain. And when setup speed is critical, an included carry strap allows you to throw the chair over your shoulder and be on your way.
Mossberg SA-20 Turkey Autoloader. This versatile gas-operated autoloader, with its Mossy Oak Obsession camo stock and forend and easy-to-handle 22-inch vent rib barrel, is perfectly suited for turkey hunting, and is also a great choice for wingshooting, target shooting and small game hunting. The SA-20 has a well-designed gas system that vents excess gases to reduce recoil and eases stress on the operating components for smooth, reliable operation. Comfortable to shoot, this perfectly-balanced 20 gauge is 2.75- and 3-inch capable with a five-round total capacity (one less with 3-inch shells). Other standard features include easy-load elevator; interchangeable choke tube system; and convenient cross-bolt safety. This easy-handling package features a 22-inch vent rib barrel with Extended Turkey choke tube and is topped with a Fiber Optic 3-Dot Sight, ideal for low-light conditions.
Winchester SX3 Long Beard. Dedicated turkey hunters often find themselves leaning up against a tree trunk waiting for that perfect shot. The SX3 Long Beard is built to give you every advantage, tactically and ergonomically. The adjustable comb and pistol grip and designed to give you a comfortable cheek weld, a comfortable grip, and an unobstructed trigger squeeze. The cantilever mount is attached to the barrel, ensuring that your Point of Impact doesn’t shift when you disassemble the gun for cleaning and lubrication. Should your optic have a problem, the Long Beard is equipped with a high performance, bright TruGlo fiber-optic front sight and an adjustable rear sight. Finally, the Briley Extra-Full Long Beard extended Invector-Plus choke tube gives you an incredibly tight tom-busting pattern.
Browning Cynergy Composite Ultimate Turkey. This sweet new rig will have big toms shaking on their roosts. It comes covered in Mossy Oak Break-Up Country camo in 24- or 26-inch barrel lengths in 3.5-inch only. The sights are the high-performance Marble Arms Bullseye rear sight and fiber-optic front sight. A short Picatinny rail allows mounting of red dot optics. You can now customize your choke options with two different chokes, making the Cynergy Turkey Gun the perfect choice for turkey hunting. Five Invector-Plus choke tubes including an Extended Ultimate Turkey and Spreader are provided. In one barrel the hunter can install the extended choke for those longer shots, but can install the spreader choke in the other barrel for those times when the turkeys come to the call within feet instead of yards. All the hunter has to do is switch the gun to shoot the choke he wants with the flick of the top-tang safety/barrel selector.
Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 12-gauge. The 12-gauge Super Black Eagle 3 is available from Benelli in your choice of black synthetic, Realtree Max-5, Mossy Oak Bottom Lands, and Gore Optifade Timber. This is an inertia-driven shotgun, with a chamber that will accept 2.75-, 3-, and 3.5-inch shells. For ease of in-the-field interface it has an oversized bolt handle, bolt release, and safety. The 12-gauge Black Eagle 3 is available with a 26- or 28-inch barrel and is suitable for just about anything you want to hunt with a shotgun. MSRP of $1,899 (black); $1,999 (camo).
CZ Swamp Magnum Over/Under 12 gauge. Looking for “reach out and touch them” range in the turkey woods? If so CZ’s Swamp Magnum, chambered for 3.5-inch shells, is a shotgun to do it with. The Swamp Magnum is the only over/under in their line that has an automatic safety that engages every time the action is opened, making it turkey-blind friendly. With polymer stocks in either black or Realtree Max5 camo, and with all metal work blacked out, this over-and-under shotgun is ready to get the drop on those wary toms. MSRP: $929-$1,029.
Tri-Star Viper Max 12-gauge Autoloader. Tri-Star says their Viper Max is the ultimate hunting shotgun. It can shoot anything from 2.75-inch target loads to 3.5-inch turkey loads. It is available in Realtree Max 5 with a 26-, 28-, or 30-inch barrel. A black synthetic version with a 28-inch barrel is an option. A fiber-optic sight and three choke tubes are included. MSRP: $640-$730.
Kent Ultimate Diamond Shot Turkey Loads. Savvy turkey hunters demand the utmost in lethality and consistent tight patterning—because they know every shot counts. In patterning percentages and velocity, Kent Turkey loads are favored by seasoned shotgunners over equivalent lead loads. All Ultimate Turkey loads contain Kent’s hard-hitting Diamond Shot lead, and are available in 2.75-, 3-, and 3.5-inch 12-gauge loads, and 3-inch 20-gauge, in 4, 5, or 6 shot.
Federal Premium 3rd Degree 20 Gauge Shotshells. Last year, Federal Premium redefined how turkey shotshells are supposed to perform with the introduction of 3rd Degree. Rather than simply pattern tightly like conventional loads, 3rd Degree uses a multi-shot, three-stage payload to deliver larger, more-forgiving patterns at close range, while still providing deadly performance at long distance. The pattern of No. 5 Premium lead, No. 6 FLITESTOPPER lead and No. 7 HEAVYWEIGHT shot is maximized by the FLITECONTROL wad, which opens from the rear and stays with the shot column longer than conventional wads for full, consistent patterns.
Browning BXD Turkey Load. Browning Ammunition hit store shelves in 2016 and hunters were quick to put the company’s waterfowl and upland bird hunting loads to the test in fields and marshes across the country. For 2017, turkey hunters across the country are celebrating the line’s new BXD Turkey load. The loads feature nickel-plated and buffered shot, loaded within an aerodynamically stabilized tight-patterning wad. BXD Turkey loads come 10 rounds per box; new offerings include: 12-gauge 3-inch 1-5/8 oz. at 1,200 fps #4, 5, 6; 12-gauge 3½-inch 1-7/8 oz. at 1,200 fps #4, 5, 6; and 20-gauge 3-inch 1 ¼ oz. at 1,150 fps #5.
Winchester Adds 20-Gauge Load To Long Beard XR Line. Well worth the wait, Winchester Ammunition is now offering its ground-breaking Long Beard XR in 20-gauge. With improved shotshell technology delivering more power and tighter loads in smaller-gauge shotguns, an increasing number of turkey hunters are opting for the 20-gauge shotgun. Now those hunters will have a load that will allow them to maximize the 20-gauge’s potential. The new 20-gauge Long Beard XR comes in a 3-inch shell loaded with either No. 5 or No. 6 shot. It comes 10 rounds to a box. The key feature behind Long Beard XR’s long-range capability is the shell’s Shot-Lok Technology. Instead of traditional buffering materials, Shot-Lok is injected as a liquid resin into the hull among the lead shot during assembly. That resin then hardens to keep pellets in place until the round is fired. Upon firing, Shot-Lok immediately fractures into a micro-buffer that protects the shot from deformation due to set-back forces. This ensures that the shot exits the muzzle nearly perfectly round, which provides tighter and more uniform patterns at extended ranges.
Hevi Shot Triple Beard. Always respected for the innovation it has brought to shotshells, for 2017 HEVI-Shot has new 20- and 12-gauge loads for turkey hunting. This all-lead turkey load combines multiple technologies to deliver better performance. The Triple Beard load combines an equal mix of premium lead antimony pellets in sizes 5, 6 and 7. Available for 2017 are a 3.5-inch 12-gauge, and 3-inch 20- and 12-gauge loads. Those old longbeards better keep their heads down! Suggested retail: $15 to $20 per box.
Nikon Monarch7i VR Laser Rangefinder. Train your eyes on the world’s first laser rangefinder to compensate for the human body’s physical inability to be completely still: the MONARCH 7i VR Laser Rangefinder. Featuring Nikon’s optical VR (Vibration Reduction) Technology, the MONARCH 7i VR ($400) is the world’s first laser rangefinder to integrate this type of system. The VR Technology reduces the effect of external vibrations caused by hand movements while ranging distant objects. For hunters, this means the target mark on the rangefinder remains stable, even when the body of the rangefinder is being moved. Not only does this provide the user with a steady image, it also stabilizes the activated laser, allowing it to maintain greater alignment for enhanced measurement performance. The VR Function begins immediately when the laser rangefinder is on, meaning there is no extra time spent trying to toggle between settings. Holding down the ranging button allows the user to continuously scan for 8 seconds. The MONARCH 7i VR has an effective measurement range of 8-1,000 yards and displays measurements in .1-yard increments.
Bushnell Trophy Xtreme Laser Rangefinder. It might seem like a stretch to consider a laser rangefinder a turkey hunting accessory, but these days Team ScoutLook doesn’t leave home without one. Nor should you. The compact size and helpful 4x magnification make binoculars unnecessary, and knowing the exact range of any object in view of your setup can be invaluable. The Trophy Extreme is state of the art, with its most-important feature for the turkey hunter being its Full Spectrum Targeting, which enables this unique rangefinder to instantly, and positively, acquire dark, non-reflective (and hopefully extremely long-bearded) targets. MAP $230.
Burris Signature HD Binocular Line. Turkeys are born with great eyesight; hunters need a little help. For 2017, Burris Optics has done its part with the introduction of its new Signature HD line of binoculars. The Signature HD line offers high-performance HD lenses and BaK prisms that produce sharper images and edge-to-edge clarity. The multi-coated lenses create maximum light transmission and reduce glare in harsh conditions. Internally, Signature HD binoculars are nitrogen-filled for waterproof and fogproof performance. The outer surface is rubber armored for protection and provides an easier grip, creating a more comfortable experience when glassing. All models come with a durable carrying case, neoprene neckstrap, lens covers, cleaning cloth and are covered by the Burris Forever Warranty.
Leupold BX-2 Tioga HD Binoculars. These neat new binoculars feature the exclusive Twilight Max Light Management System that allows hunters to look deep into the shadows and find elusive turkeys and big game animals where they hide. The Twilight Max Light Management System works to increase optical performance in low light, while maximizing color contrast and resolution. At the same time, it significantly reduces glare. Going far beyond the concept of light transmission, Twilight Max optimizes the wavelengths which pass through the system, giving the user the best possible performance in all light conditions. With true high-definition glass, the BX-2 Tioga HD is available in several magnification sizes, which means there is a perfect match for any hunt or adventure. The 8x32mm and 10x32mm (shown above) models are ideal for lightweight hunts, while the 8x42mm and 10x42mm are a perfect medium-sized option for deep woods and forests. The larger 10x50mm and 12x50mm versions are great choices for those western or long-range locales. Primos Ninja Mesh Full Face Mask. At least one Team HuntStand member has close to 50 face masks with different designs and formats in a drawer in his man cave. Most of them are problematic, so he is always looking for an improvement. If you wear glasses you likely have found most masks have uncomfortable wire frames and/or don’t allow exhaled breath to escape the mask, resulting in fogged-up lenses, usually at the most inopportune moments. The well-designed Primos Ninja Mesh Full Face Mask with its unobstructed mouth and eye holes is the answer to this problem; we’re just wondering why no one thought of this design sooner. MSRP $8.37
WildEar Tactical Series. Hearing protection and enhancement specialist WildEar has added the Tactical Series to its diverse lineup, designed specifically for shooters who need reliable mobile hearing protection when hunting, or working through extensive tactical training courses, but who also require the audible enhancement of being able to hear a range master or range timer. The Tactical Series features two digital programs and is load ed with the most advanced digital hearing enhancement and protection technology available to shooters and sportsmen. You’ll also enjoy conversing with other shooters at normal levels without needing to remove your WildEars. Enhanced features include: improved sound quality by reducing circuit noise and a Wax Protection System to prevent ear wax build-up of the WildEar sound port.
Decibullz Custom Molded Percussive Filters. Decibullz, a leader in custom thermofit earplugs and earphones, has made a new addition to its earplug line: Custom Molded Percussive Filters. These high-tech filters allow comfortable conversation yet engage automatically to block noise from gunfire through a mechanical filter that doesn’t require batteries, so it’s always ready. Decibullz’s existing earplugs come with an impressive Noise Reduction Rating of 31dB, and the new Percussive Filters offer similar protection levels for users like hunters while allowing for some ambient noise to pass through. That additional protection is crucial, as a single shotgun blast can hit 165 dB. The filters also allow sound directionality and spatiality, meaning users can hear all around them, which is critical for hunters.

Flambeau MAD Spin-N-Strut Motion Decoy. If it looks like a turkey, it might be a turkey. If it looks and moves like a turkey, there is no doubt about it. In addition to looking like the real thing, the new Flambeau Spin-N-Strut gobbler decoy has some super moves that can mean the difference when luring wary toms. A simple pull on a string initiates a 90-degree turn, and further tension raises the fan up to half, then full strut. This kind of super-realism is the antidote for a henned-up gobbler, since maintaining dominance is one of the few things that might pull him away from his harem. This decoy will get it done. MSRP $170.
Flextone Thunder Chicks Decoys. It may not matter to the turkeys, but Team ScoutLook is just not comfortable setting up behind an ugly decoy. The new Thunder Chicks from Flextone boost our confidence and fool even the most-discriminating gobbler. If he won’t respond to a Thunder Chick, he probably wouldn’t respond to the real thing. These blow-molded, one-piece decoys have incredible feather detail and true-to-life feeding and upright postures. Better yet? At $40 each they are more affordable than most of today’s super-realistic decoys.
Avian-X ½ Strut Jake. On several occasions we have seen brash young jakes intimidate and terrorize mature gobblers. Since body posture is the key to a turkey’s complex pecking order, you risk an intimidation response if you’re using a full-strut gobbler, or a strutting bull jake decoy. Adding the ultra-realistic new Avian-X LCD ½ Strut Jake to your setup should signal an air of uncertainty that is sure to raise the ire of even the most-apprehensive gobbler. MSRP: $120.
Cherokee Sports Fusion Series Decoys. The new Fusion Decoys from Cherokee Sports are an ideal fit for run-and-gun turkey hunters. They are not only lightweight; a whole flock of these realistic inflatable decoys will fit easily into a fanny pack. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the biologically accurate heads (molded from the real thing and tricked out with lifelike eyes and hair), coupled with photo-printed bodies, should fool even the most-discriminating gobbler. MSRP: $19 single, $50/3-piece flock.
PREGAME TabLock Turkey Kit from Birchwood Casey. This smart kit provides turkey hunters a quick and easy way to pattern their shotguns, or test new loads before the season. The TabLock backer eliminates the need to carry tape or a stapler to your shooting area. PREGAME TabLock Turkey Kits ($13) feature a heavy 12.5×24-inch corrugated plastic backer board with pre-cut TabLocks that will securely hold the 12×18-inch PREGAME Turkey Targets while shooting. The kit includes a 24×9.5-inch wire frame that can be easily set up in any safe shooting area and three PREGAME Turkey Targets.
Primos Gen 3 Trigger Sticks. Shooting sticks can be your best friend if you are hunting from a ground blind. The new Primos Trigger Stick Gen 3 with locking leg angles and one-hand height adjustment will give you the support you need to make that perfect shot while you are sitting in a blind chair. Available in standard and tall monopod, bipod and tripod formats, I recommend the “tall” format to ensure clearance of ground blind windows. MSRP: $60 to $180.
Hawk Hunting Sportsman’s Gearbox. Have all your gear where you need it, when you need it with this handy shelf system ($20) that is easily added to ground blinds, hunting seats, and ladder stands. Divider spacing can be adjusted to hold binoculars, rangefinder, game calls, wind checker, cell phones, drink mugs and more. Universal sliding brackets with silent rubber-coated hooks quickly and easily attach to the side of most portable blind rod systems, hunting seats or treestands. Brackets also include screw holes and ratchet strap slots for attaching directly to hard-sided blind walls, or the tree itself.
Petzl Tactikka CORE Headlamp. Most turkey hunters spend an inordinate amount of time traipsing around the countryside in the dark, and we need some help if that’s going to work out consistently well. The Tactikka CORE headlamp offers fairly amazing 350 lumen brightness, but it’s ideal for both close-range work as well as for moving around. Featuring a mixed beam, it ensures wide, focused or red stealth lighting. A Hybrid headlamp, the CORE features a battery that is rechargeable via standard USB port; it is also compatible with standard AAA/LR03 batteries (not included) without the need for an adapter.
Strut Commander Calls Debut. As a leading manufacturer in game calls, Duck Commander recently launched its new brand—Strut Commander—to provide hardcore turkey hunters with calls that provide a full range of turkey vocalization with top-quality performance beginning in 2017. Strut Commander is offering a complete line of turkey calls including mouth calls, box calls and friction calls. The new Strut Commander calls are made in the U.S.A. for the tried-and-true turkey hunters looking to put food on the table for their family. The calls are easy to use, and deliver great range whether the hunter is running the call to sound like the cutting of an excited hen, clean yelps, or soft purrs. The Strut Commander calls are currently being shipped from the warehouse to retailers near you and will be available online and in sporting goods stores throughout the spring turkey hunting season.
Zink Calls Enters Custom Turkey Box Call Market. Veteran turkey hunters know there’s no such thing as a single, perfect call. But nothing, it seems, rings out to elicit responses from stubborn or distant gobblers quite like the sweet, wood-on-wood pleadings produced by a top-quality box call. New for 2017, Zink Calls has introduced a pair of high performance, hand-built and hand-tuned box calls to their trusted and extensive lineup of hunt-proven pot and diaphragm-style turkey calls. Each of these new double-sided Power Hen and Wicked Box (shown above) calls deliver pure turkey sounds and maximum versatility to the turkey hunter who never leaves the truck without a box call in his or her vest. Whether the situation calls for yelps, cutts, purrs, putts or cackles, either of these beauties will tell old Tom just what he wants to hear. And like all Zink Calls, every Power Hen and Wicked Box is built by hand and custom tuned right here in the USA, one at a time and with pure turkey passion.
Cherokee Sports iCall. The new iCall from Cherokee Sports looks a little gimmicky (it features the exact size, shape, and look of a smartphone) and so at first, we were a bit skeptical. That is, until we picked one up and yelped on it. The cherrywood body and hardwood striker give it a nice raspy tone, with a surprising amount of volume. And unlike most pot calls, it fits easily in a shirt pocket, a nice bonus. If you are traveling light the iCall is an excellent way to keep in touch with the local toms. MSRP $20.
Flextone Turkey Man Double Stack Mouth Call. Team HuntStand has been a fan of stacked-frame diaphragm calls since way back when we heard calling legend Eddie Salter making perfect hen yelps on one. Several companies have marketed stacked-frame calls since that time, but they were mostly hard to play and capricious, and didn’t get much notice. When Eddie brought his Double Stack diaphragm formula to Flextone, that changed. Stack-frame calls that once took some getting used to now have a shape and a consistency that makes realistic turkey talk easy. And it’s all thanks to the “Turkey Man.” MSRP $12.
Quaker Boy Odyssey Box Call. Box calls have been around since Moby Dick was a minnow, but there is always room for improvement. Quaker Boy employed some audio engineering and space-age technology to create the new Odyssey Box Call that features a unique, acoustically designed lid that has plenty of contact surface for perfect yelps, cuts and cackles. You’ll also find special sound openings that allow the turkey tones to escape the confines of the box. Treated with the company’s proprietary waterproof coating, the Odyssey box will definitely add volume and clarity to your calling. MSRP $60.
Quaker Boy Cutter Max Diaphragm Call. The “cutter” format is an old standby reed configuration, but with the Cutter Max Quaker Boy has added some space-age materials to improve an already tried-and-true design. Their patented SealRite cushioned-frame technology enables the frame to conform to any palate size and shape, resulting in a positive air flow with no leaks. The sealed fit also increases the vibration zone between the tongue and palate, by bringing the tongue closer to the reeds. This results in easier tone manipulation and more realistic turkey sounds. MSRP $15.
Knight & Hale Razors Edge Box Call. Knight & Hale has an interesting new take on an old standby. The Razors Edge box call combines an innovative aluminum striking surface with the acoustic qualities of a mahogany box—for distinctive raspy yelps when the blood wood lid strikes the call’s metal edge. The wooden side of the box can also be used for smoother, more-traditional yelps. It’s alright to re-invent the wheel if you can improve on the old one, but you should always play before you pay. If it doesn’t sound good to you it won’t work for you. MSRP $50
Holei One Sider Box Call by Cody Turkey Calls. Bill Zearing, CEO of Cody Turkey Calls, has always been an innovative call builder. He was the first to commercially manufacture high-performance slate and glass calls (among the standard of excellence to this day), and he literally went outside the box to develop his new and innovative Holei One Sider box call ($75-$115). By combining laminated sides with a concave lid and unique Vertical Core technology, this innovator is once again setting industry standards. Don’t be put off by this call’s “non-traditional” appearance; it is a winner.
Trigger Finger by Quaker Boy. Another “turkey call for dummies,” the Trigger Finger from Quaker Boy is a push-button call without a push button. Instead, you place your “trigger finger” inside of the box and push. It makes perfect hen yelps wet or dry, with no external push-pull rods sticking out to sound off accidently. This smartly designed, compact little call is almost too easy. Why didn’t Team HuntStand think of this? MSRP $40.
Knight & Hale Turkey Magnet. If you can fog up a mirror, you should be able to make decent hen yelps on a push-button call. The Knight & Hale Turkey Magnet attaches to the non-action side of your shotgun receiver with a rare-earth magnet for easy hands-free operation. Activation occurs with a simple push of the button with your thumb, which is already in position on the receiver. We’re not quite sure where “rare earth” comes from or how they get the magnets out of it, but this call will stay in place even when shooting 3½-inch magnum loads. MSRP $40
Yamaha Wolverine R-Spec EPS. This fine unit is built for getting into and out of difficult turkey terrain, and it also comes Team HuntStand approved; Executive Editor Mark Melotik field-tested the new Wolverine R-Spec EPS recently on a Texas deer and hog hunt, and found impressive power and nimble handling both on and off the local trails. The powerful 708cc fuel-injected four-stroke engine, coupled with lower overall CG profile of this machine, allow it to go many places where typical UTVs and their higher center of gravity, tend to struggle. The high-clearance Wide-Arc suspension arms of the Wolverine create a “cavity” beneath the machine that allows it to dodge larger terrain obstacles (such as huge mountain stone and deep ruts). Also helpful are the full skid plates mounted beneath the Wolverine that allow this smartly built unit to literally glide over obstacles that would pose problems for lesser machines. Yamaha’s On-Command 4WD system also keeps the wheels turning in typical wet or muddy conditions, or when climbing rocky or steep terrain. The Wolverine’s 26-inch Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires deliver positive grip and traction in the harshest of conditions; this is the tire of choice for many who need the most-dependable tread available.
Textron Off Road Stampede Side-by-Side. The gas-powered Textron Off Road Stampede 4×4 is designed for both work and play, whether it’s turkey hunting, doing chores on the farm or attacking a challenging trail. A two-passenger side-by-side, Stampede offers features such as a German-engineered, precision-tuned 846cc liquid-cooled 80HP EFI engine; an industry-first, customizable extended cab; and the most storage space in its class. Backed by a robust two-year warranty, the Stampede has over 70 custom-fit, purpose-built accessories to choose from.

Wiebe Knives, makers of intuitive and reliable knives and skinning tools for diehard hunters and trappers, introduces the Red Fox to its growing line of replaceable-blade hunting and skinning knives.
