Today marks the official launch of the new Savage Impulse rifle. It’s a straight-pull bolt-action rifle—the first of its kind to hit the American market in a major way.
My first exposure to straight-pull rifles took place early in my career during a driven big-game hunt in Poland. While watching my new friends—a hodgepodge of outdoor media professionals from France, Germany and Sweden—efficiently shoot at running animals in the dense Polish timber, the speed and precision offered by their simple-cycling, straight-pull bolt actions (two motions) compared to my traditional bolt action (four motions) was immediately obvious.
European hunters have carried straight-pull centerfire rifles in the field for more than 2 decades, but I’ve long wondered when an American rifle manufacturer would design a straight-pull rifle for American hunters, recreational shooters and competitive shooters. Now Savage has done it. After 2 years of top-secret development, it’s finally time to pull off the covers and get the straight story on this new American straight-pull.
