Not everyone's first bow buck is a heavy-beamed drop-tine giant, a sweet surprise for New York's Kimberly Erb.

MORE FROM HuntStand

Make no mistake, New York’s Kimberly Erb is on the fast track to bowhunting success. Is she ever. Erb, 40, of Cohocton, was in her third year of bowhunting this past October when she bagged her first buck. And what a buck it is. For sending in a HuntStand success story and photos of an incredible NY drop-tine buck, Erb is the Week Seven winner of the HuntStand 2022 Big Buck ALERT contest. The win scores Erb a sweet hunt pack from ALPS OutdoorZ: the versatile Trail Blazer (see below). The weekly win also makes Erb eligible for a chance at our Grand Prize: A ground blind/chair combo from Browning/ALPS OutdoorZ and two premium Burris hunting optics with a total value of $1,278!

“On this hunt I was actually targeting two other deer, two 10-point bucks, when this buck suddenly showed up with them Oct. 16, as a newcomer,” Erb wrote. “I was hunting a private 12-acre parcel in New York and had never seen, nor captured this buck on trail camera.”

Drop-Tine Buck Right Angle

“My stand is in a pine tree on a 20-acre scrub field with a low depression, which deer like to travel through. On the fateful day I had an 8 mph southwest wind; it was around 47 degrees, with clear skies. I watched all three bucks come out of the hedge row across the field, about 136 yards away, and head straight at me.

“All three bucks stopped about half way to my stand, and started fighting and sparring. They kept making their way to me until I shot the largest buck, a 17 pointer with two drop tines. The shot was 10 yards. This is my first archery buck after starting three years ago; this was the seventh day I hunted in 2022. HuntStand was used to locate the bedding area these bucks were using, and their feeding areas. I also used the HuntStand app to help place my stand. The goal was to intercept the local deer as they traveled between bedding and feeding areas. They were feeding primarily in nearby corn fields.”
