A crisp, smooth trigger pull and a controlled explosion that echoes for miles around. And don’t forget the mule kick delivered by most center-fire rifles, especially moderate to large calibers. After all, recoil is the thing most shooters dread, right? Gun recoil management is a real thing, and understanding the shooting tips and tactics that help tame it are important to know.
Managing Gun Recoil
- Make sure the rifle fits properly.
- Adjust the length-of-pull as needed.
- Adapt the comb height as needed.
- Set an adequate eye relief (to prevent the scope from contacting your face).
- Use a proper grip and “anchor” the gun into the shoulder.
- Implement good comfortable grips with the trigger hand and fore-end hand. (Don’t squeeze too hard, or it might impact accuracy.)
- Consider a muzzle brake, which helps displace gases and decrease recoil by as much as 40%.
No matter what caliber rifle you’re shooting, recoil is always a factor in managing gun recoil. In this video, HuntStand’s Josh Dahlke covers ways to mitigate recoil. Here are gun recoil management tips so it doesn’t affect hunting accuracy.
