Deer season is here, and for many hunters, including me, this signifies a remarkable time of year. It’s deer season!
While the upcoming article is dedicated to some of the rut’s best days, I recommend putting your butt in a treestand, ground blind, natural blind, etc., as much as possible between October 1 and the end of your season.
Of course, many variables factor into making a great day of deer hunting. Weather conditions, rut timelines, moon phases, and more, can make a day great or awful. Still, here’s my two cents on the best rut days of 2025, and you can count on the fact that no matter where I’m hunting whitetails in the country, I’ll be hunting on these days.

Opening Day
A lot of deer hunters kick off in September, but October 1 is the magical date when the majority of whitetail hunters nationwide can saddle up and start riding.
As hunters, we often talk about opening day. There are songs written about it. Still, opening day never makes a “Best Day” report.
Why?
While October 1 is far from what hunters classify as the “annual whitetail rut,” it’s an excellent day to be in the deer woods.
Sure, we live for November, but the shedding of velvet indicates the beginning of the rut. When the velvet comes off, antler mineralization and boosted testosterone lead to rut-related behaviors like rubbing and scraping.
October 1 makes the list for the following reasons:
- Hunt pressure is at its lowest point. Aside from hunters scouting and running cellular trail cameras, deer have received zero hunt pressure.
- Though mature bucks aren’t actively searching for estrus does, they’re hitting food sources hard. Larger agricultural fields and isolated food plots can lead to big-buck paydirt.
- Typically, the core area of mature bucks decreases in size as they age. Chances are good that the 4-1/2-year-old you let walk last year is back in the area. If you have a shooter buck on a bed-to-feed pattern, kill him.
Even if your opening day isn’t precisely the first day of October, get into the mindset above to kick off your season if you’re jumping in before the rut.

I love to call. While many hunters prefer to let every single day in the deer woods unfold naturally, I like to make things happen. Calling does this.

October 15-18
OK, it’s a four-day range, not a single day, but that doesn’t matter. Slugging the 15th as better than the 17th is impossible and laughable.
Dubbed the dreaded “October Lull,” for the past five years, during this timeframe, at least one, if not every, shooter buck on my property daylights. That’s actual recorded data, and it seems more big bucks are dying during the lull than in past years.
Why?
The first reason is that too many deer hunters have bought into the “lull” theory, and as a result, pressure in the woods decreases. Nothing negatively affects natural deer behavior like hunting pressure. When pressure subsides, deer act like deer again instead of ghosts.
Another reason this date range is so effective is that daytime and nighttime temperatures are decreasing, and if you get lucky enough to catch a high-pressure day when the barometric pressure bumps above 30.0 inches, you’ve got a great chance of seeing a shooter on his feet.
Here are some other reasons these are must-hunt whitetail days:
- Rubbing and scraping are ramping up. Find a rub line near known buck bedding or an enormous community scrape and spend some stand time.
- Though mature bucks know the girls aren’t ready, they’ll start showing up in areas where does frequent. This means isolated kill plots, known doe bedding areas, and water sources are excellent places to arrow a giant.

October 24-27
There’s something with me and four-day hunt stretches. Over the years, no matter the species, when I string together four solid days of hunting, I earn my opportunity 90% of the time.
As with the October 15-18 range, I’m not pulling numbers out of thin air. Instead, I’m penning actual recorded data. I journal daily and write everything down. In 2022, I shot a 5-1/2 year-old 8-point over a water source that I’d added to my deer dirt on October 23. On October 24, 2023, I arrowed a Boone & Crockett whitetail over another man-made pond.
HuntStand’s Whitetail Activity Forecast — the only model I trust — predicted evening movement at 86%. Two other forecast models predicted the evening activity to be slow. I shot the buck with seven minutes of legal light left. The buck checked a doe on a small kill plot and then came to water.
Here are some other reasons these days are must-hunt whitetail days:
- Bucks are frequenting scrapes, and rublines are expanding.
- Cooler weather and shorter days keep mature bucks on their feet for more extended periods of time.
- Bucks are starting to search actively and becoming responsive to calling and decoying.

November 6-9
Give me any four days to bowhunt whitetails, regardless of the weather or moon phase, and these are the four I will sit dawn to dark in a treestand or ground blind. During this time of year, I live on my HuntStand app. I constantly watch weather forecasts, wind directions, and the Whitetail Activity Forecast.
No matter where I bowhunt white-tailed deer in the country — whether public or private — I build a hunt map in HuntStand. With stands and, in some instances, trail cameras placed on the maps I build, I can effectively plan entrance and exit routes and use wind direction and trail camera notes to put myself in the best area to harvest a mature deer.
Though it’s likely obvious, here are some tips to help put you in the whitetail chips during this four-day hunt.
- Get on a waterway. Whitetails love waterways and will work along rivers, creeks, streams, and canals as they check downwind doe bedding areas. River crossings are excellent sit-and-wait locations.
- If you know of a pinch-point between two doe bedding areas and the wind is right, get in there.
- If the weather is unseasonably warm, remember where your water sources are and sit and wait on a thirsty buck.
- Put a decoy on the upwind side of your treestand or ground blind. Don’t be afraid to rattle and grunt to simulate a buck fight.
- Get on the ground, mount a doe decoy to your bow’s riser, set a 3-D buck decoy 20 yards away, and become part of the decoy setup. It works like a charm and is an excellent recipe for success when there isn’t a suitable tree to hunt from.
- Don’t get out of your treestand or ground blind. I’ve never killed a mature whitetail buck between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. However, I know many hunters who have, and I’ve seen shooters on their feet during this timeframe.

November 27-30
You’re in the rut’s fourth quarter, but who cares. Winning happens in the fourth quarter, and if you stay after it and grind it out during the final four days of November, chances are good you’ll earn a string-dropping moment.
There’s a doe or two in your area that has yet to cycle, and every mature buck in the woods will be hunting for her. You’ll see every shooter on your property during a single sit if you can get around a late-cycling doe.
Here’s how to win during November’s final four days:
- If HuntStand forecasts a significant weather front, get on a late-season food source. Does that have been bred and those that haven’t will hit the food and the bucks will be in tow.
- Toss out a buck decoy with a doe decoy and do some calling. If you don’t have deer decoys or don’t want to use them but want to do some calling, get in the thick timber and make some doe bleats.
- It’s time to take a risk and creep closer to doe bedding areas. It’s also an excellent time to move in on an area where you know bucks are bedding. Move past perimeter scrapes and rubs, get in deep, risk bumping deer, and get right on top of a shooter buck.

I’m not going to cap this article off by telling you to put in your rut-cation dates at work based on the intel you just read. If possible, stay flexible.
