MORE FROM HuntStand

Deer hunters who create good hunting situations suited for shot opportunities are more likely to fill tags. Here’s how to make the perfect buck trap.

  1. Start with a good location (close to bedding areas) where deer naturally travel during daylight.
  2. Be sure it offers good stand trees for different wind directions.
  3. Ensure the spot offers good entry and exit routes.
  4. Remove trees to create a 1/4- to 1/2-acre food plot.
  5. Plant screening cover around the perimeter.
  6. Seed with something that will help mellow out the rough soil (such as brassicas).
  7. Continue to enhance the spot over time.

Property enhancements like these take time to develop. Continue to improve on these big-buck hotspots and adjust as needed. Over time, you’ll drill down on the best practices, making these perfect buck traps.
