The rut is a wild time. Tame it a bit with HuntStand's mighty tools.
The month most whitetail hunters wait for is the month of November, and for many whitetail hunters, flipping the calendar is a celebration. Whether it’s the best time to kill a target buck is arguable. What isn’t arguable is that the month puts big bucks on their feet in daylight more than any other time of year.
Recently, I visited with my son, Hunter, to talk about how hunting technology is helping hunters be more effective during this chaotic time in the whitetail woods. At first, he didn’t get it. You see, Hunter is 21 years old. He got serious about whitetail deer hunting at 19. Until then, his hunting life revolved around waterfowl. Hunter had immediate access to HuntStand, and he watched me use the app. He didn’t see my pre-HuntStand whitetail years, which included long nights tossing and turning, wondering which stand to sit in, when to sit, and what bucks might be lurking.
The author says it's important to teach new hunters both traditional woodsmanship and modern hunting technology and techniques.
Hunter watched me use features like HuntStand’s wind (HuntZone) and weather tools, combined with trail camera analysis, to decide when and where to sit. With Stealth Cam and Muddy cellular trail cameras, the Command Pro app works with the HuntStand app to store images from camera sites. These images are available at the touch of a button.
He saw me use HuntStand’s Whitetail Activity Forecast to check peak buck movement times, peak rut dates, and more. He watched me use proven technology to cut through the chaos of November and put myself in the big-buck chips every time I left the house.

What Is HuntStand’s Whitetail Activity Forecast?
As I write this, I’m looking down at my iPhone. Right now, the outside temperature is 58 degrees, and peak deer movement times are 8 a.m. (71%) and 5 p.m. (75%). The predicted peak rut dates for my specific hunt area, which I created in the HuntStand app, are October 31 through November 14. I can view extended forecasts in four-, eight-, and 15-day models. The wind is blowing at 4 miles per hour from the West, and the barometric pressure is 29.93. That’s a ton of valuable whitetail information at the click of a button, and it tells me I shouldn’t be writing this evening; I should be hunting.
Does HuntStand’s Whitetail Activity Forecast Eliminate Woodsmanship?
I cut my whitetail hunting teeth before trail camera film, weather apps, etc. I killed deer. Nothing trumps good woodsmanship. Many hunters, especially new ones, ask: Do fancy-to-do apps eliminate good woodsmanship? The answer is: No! However, apps like HuntStand and its many effective whitetail-oriented tools shorten the learning curve and give whitetail hunters a sharper edge than ever before. Used savvily, HuntStand’s various tools play integral roles in key scenarios.

How to Use HuntStand’s Whitetail Activity Forecast to Help You Kill More Bucks
The Whitetail Activity Forecast isn’t just another whitetail movement model. It uses the latest research on deer movements and proprietary rut data specific to your hunting area. The Whitetail Activity Forecast isn’t general; it’s specific, and during the rut, details matter.
As with most hunting apps, HuntStand keeps moving forward. I’m days out from a film crew coming to capture my Colorado whitetail rut hunt. I’m feeling the pressure. The Whitetail Activity Forecast and Whitetail Rut Map are easing my anxiety. From November 4 through November 9, when the film crew is here, I’m inside the Peak Rut window. I also know that predicted activity ratings are above 80% throughout scheduled hunt days. I know the moon phase, predicted wind, and barometric pressure. This information is all so valuable.
How Does the Whitetail Activity Forecast Work for You?
HuntStand’s Whitetail Activity Forecast is a gamechanger for hunters aiming to capitalize on November’s prime whitetail movement. This innovative tool combines proprietary rut data and scientific research to provide localized predictions, often down to the county level.
The forecast generates activity percentages that indicate the likelihood of deer movement based on environmental conditions. Scores above 60% suggest favorable conditions, with 80% or higher indicating excellent movement and above 90% showing optimal conditions. With these insights, hunters can plan outings strategically, maximize their chances of success, and be in the right spot at the right time when the big bucks are on the move.

The author with a deer he called, "Too Tall."
How HuntStand Helped Me Shoot a Big Buck Nicknamed “Too Tall”
I won’t write about or push things that don’t work. I despise snake oil products. Several years ago, I tested multiple whitetail activity forecast models. I can’t recall exactly, but I believe I was testing five different models on five different apps.
At the time, I was hunting a buck I nicknamed “Too Tall.” It was the evening of October 23. Temperatures were warm, but trail cam data told me Too Tall was inching closer to daylighting in a specific spot in my hunting area. The HuntStand Whitetail Activity Forecast for that evening was 65%. Every other app was well below that mark. While not all use percentages, others read: “Slow,” “Poor,” etc. (Concerning deer movement.)
Using HuntStand’s wind and weather tools, I knew I had a semi-favorable wind. It wasn’t great, but I felt the buck could travel with the wind, mostly in his face. If the wind held and my HuntZone wind was correct, he wouldn’t get me. Big deer love to move when they feel they have the wind advantage. That buck is hanging on my wall, and HuntStand’s Whitetail Activity Forecast played a big part.
